Why produce a webcast?

Webcasts add a level of visual excitement to online events.

A live television broadcast has a unique level of visual excitement. The viewer isn’t bound to their seat. Rather, multiple cameras can provide different sight lines of the action: a side view, a front view, a view moving alongside the action, and more. Moreover, the viewer can see the action at different levels of detail: the panoramic shot, the wide shot, the tight look, or the zoom.

Similarly, webcast attendees can enjoy that same thrill, stimulation, and degree of visual information. Rather than watching a fixed video stream of a speaker, an onsite cameraperson can deliver a high degree of visual engagement.

All of this involves more equipment, more planning, and more expertise, but the investment makes sense for the right type of event.

What are common use cases for webcasts?

Webcasts work very well for any product demo—from kitchen ware to commercial equipment—for the simple reason that live performances show more than a video demo. An attendee can better make their own assessment: Does the product's app look glitchy? Is the product as easy to operate as the presenter says? Does the material look as sturdy as promised? Meanwhile, the camera can help the presenter strengthen their case by showing the product from different angles, with greater levels of detail, and with genuine usage.

In-person events serve as the other primary use case. For instance, the streaming of a corporate town hall to a worldwide audience. While a sizable audience may attend in person at the corporate office, employees from around the globe can join in as well. Different cameras can focus on different speakers, or the panel as a whole, while also toggling to the audience or to someone participating in the Q&A.

A webcast also allows for two-way interaction (instead of a one-way stream). Online attendees can write in with questions or join the conversation by camera or mic.

What are some of the hazards of webcast production?

Webcasts pose a unique set of technical challenges. The three major ones include:

  • Having the correct equipment
  • Testing how the equipment works with the webcast platform
  • Testing the equipment on site

In addition to technological concerns, coordination between the speaker(s), the cameraperson, the event producer, and the event team also pose a challenge. Rest assured that Rally Point Webinars will conduct a rigorous preparation process that will ensure the equipment is working and have everyone in alignment and ready to perform for the webcast.
